How Does Spinal Decompression Work?

Spinal decompression works by utilizing a specifically engineered table that allows a combination of force of pull, angle in degree of pull and varying time to provide mechanical axial traction to the spine. As the table pulls and releases, it activates a phenomenon called “imbibition”. In the simplest of terms, it’s a pumping action that creates a negative pressure change within the intervertebral disc, surrounding soft tissue and spinal joints. In damaged and degenerative disc conditions, imbibition is often lost, leading to fewer nutrients exchange and hydration within the disc, which is more likely to become injured and painful.

This gentle pulling and releasing of the spine in a controlled manner can help re-establish a more normal imbibition. With more normal imbibition, the pressure inside the disc reduces (decompression) and allows the disc bulge or herniation and the nutrients to be pulled back into the disc. This decompression will rehydrate the disc and surrounding structures, which creates a physiological change that decreases pain levels and assists the body’s natural healing process.
